Outdoor Living: 6 Trends for 2024
With the warm season approaching, outdoor moments are making a comeback. If you’re considering refreshing your outdoor space, read on to discover 6 new trends.
As the warm season draws near, you might want to update your outdoor space. Whether you have a small balcony or a spacious garden, 2024 brings new trends to explore. Industry experts highlight a shift toward luxury, with designers and homeowners treating outdoor spaces with the same meticulous attention as interiors. "I'm noticing a big movement toward greater care and commitment in outdoor design, similar to what we’ve seen in interior design”, ," says Kathy Kuo of Kathy Kuo Home. "Creating a cohesive, beautiful, and comfortable outdoor space is no longer just about putting out some nice chairs."
Consequently, expectations for outdoor furniture are rising. "Design-savvy clients appreciate timelessness, functionality, and products that stand the test of time,” writes Jenon Bailie, Director of Merchandising and Design at Room & Board. "In addition to aesthetics, there’s a stronger focus on choice, quality, and durability."
In this article, we’ll share six trends, ranging from simple style choices and practical purchasing tips to major architectural features, quality, and outdoor luxury.
High-quality investments
"The importance of nature and outdoor time is top of mind, as is the value of investing in high-quality, long-lasting products instead of disposable ones", says Kuo. Today’s designers and homeowners seek outdoor furniture that offers both lasting aesthetic and comfort.
"Look for materials like teak wood, powder-coated aluminum, concrete, and high-quality wicker. Also, consider your local climate conditions before purchasing," Kuo advises. Bailie, adds that sustainability is another significant factor influencing design and furniture selection in this industry.

Smart home functionality for outdoor spaces
As outdoor spaces become more integrated into daily home life, Dominique Coffman, VP of Design at Design West, points out that lighting and smart home features are becoming a trend. These additions not only visually connect indoor and outdoor areas for a cohesive look but also enhance functionality.
"They create a seamless living space throughout the home, enabling control over audio or lighting 24/7", says Coffman. With smart outdoor spaces, activities are no longer strictly limited by time of day, offering greater flexibility.
Design continuity between indoors and outdoors
Bailie emphasizes the importance of consistent use of colors, patterns, and materials — whether for a small patio or a large terrace. A unified style visually connects the interior and exterior design of a home. "Continuity links the indoors with the outdoors", says the expert, and this year we expect this connection to grow stronger. This seamless design is evident not only in simple décor choices but also in surfaces. According to the 2024 Trends Report by Cosentino, surfaces play a key role in connecting indoor and outdoor spaces. "We’ve seen a growing number of homeowners seeking surfaces that can withstand the elements," says Elizabeth Ramos, Marketing Director at Cosentino Americas. Materials like sintered stone, such as Dekton, are now being used for outdoor kitchen countertops , flooring, facades, tables, and even fire pits, Ramos explains.
According to Cosentino’s 2024 Trends Report, luxury elements and high-quality details are increasingly in demand. These additions not only enhance comfort and usability but also add value to properties. Popular items include fire pits, bar and entertainment zones, and outdoor kitchens, which are trending among those who want to fully embrace outdoor living.
Drawing inspiration from architectural design in year-round favorable climates, Coffman highlights sliding walls as a standout feature in today’s outdoor living trends. "They create a transition and continuity between indoor and outdoor living" Coffman explains. Closed, they provide a visual connection. Open, they create a combined living space. The living room expands, the kitchen extends, and seating areas multiply. "This allows both interiors and exteriors to function as multifunctional spaces for dining, relaxing, and entertaining", adds Coffman.
According to Joey Conicella, President of Soco Interiors, the goal isn’t just to connect indoor and outdoor spaces but to embrace nature beyond the walls of your home. "Think lush, layered plants, lively garden spaces, and natural greenery", says Joey.
While green trends have dominated interior design in recent years, Conicella reminds us to bring them outdoors too: "Does it feel alive?" is a question he suggests asking yourself". To breathe life into your space, add planters with live plants of varying heights, shapes, and sizes. Play with space and color tones—it’s an instant way to refresh your space and follow trends," he advises.
